Work from “Home” at Sea with Royal Caribbean’s New Starlink Internet
Big news, cruise lovers! Your chances of getting away with working from “home” on a cruise ship just shot up like a rocket with Royal Caribbean’s recent announcement of a partnership with SpaceX’s Starlink to bring new high-speed satellite internet to all ships by early 2023.
Royal Caribbean CEO Jason Liberty said in a press release, “This technology will provide game-changing internet connectivity onboard our ships. It will improve and enable more high-bandwidth activities like video streaming as well as activities like video calls.”
In light of this, I offer the following tips for how to get away with working from “home” on your Royal Caribbean cruise:
Tips for Working from “Home” on your Royal Caribbean Cruise
- If you’ve been working from home in a t-shirt for the past two years, don’t accidentally appear on video in your formal night tux: “Awfully nice duds for a Wednesday afternoon department meeting, Stan. You headed to prom later?”
- On a related note, dress appropriately for the weather back home. It might be cold and drizzly on your cruise to Alaska, but stash the hat and raincoat out of view when it’s 110 degrees in Arizona.
- Start blurring the background for all your video calls now. Blame it on your new boyfriend: “He’s such a pig. Feel me ladies?”
- A few days before your cruise, start complaining about car trouble, so the boss doesn’t ask you to come into the office to drop something off: “Oh man, wish I could, my car is still on the fritz. But it should be fixed by the time I disembark on Friday. I mean, um…”
- Don’t take a meeting from your balcony: “Whale! Wait, no, I didn’t mean you Janet!” And finally…
- Pack your usual work day coffee mug. I once made the mistake of calling into a meeting drinking from my “Ship Faced” travel mug:

I’m very excited about the prospect of “working” from a cruise ship! I’ve been WFH for the past 2+ years and it would be amazing to WFC, and you know what that C stands for 🙂 So happy Royal is pioneering the next era of Internet at Sea and what is possible. Now I just need to figure out how I am actually going to “work” from a cruise ship. The FOMO factor definitely comes into play, I am working while I could be exploring the ship or at the Solarium hot tub or downing another Sorrento’s pizza…hmm…not sure if I can do it but we will see lol.
